Activity 2. Prevalence To present data on the prevalence of mental illness. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, projector Time: 15 minutes Instruction: The presenter shows data on the prevalence of mental illness in order to show that mental illness is quite common. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five youth suffer from a mental health condition and less than half receive treatment. NAMI also states that half of all people living with a mental illness experience their first symptoms at the age of 14. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that suicide is the third leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 10 and 24, and every year 157,000 youth between those same ages undergo emergency treatment for self-inflicted injuries. Activity 3. Stress Reaction Purpose: To identify the risk factors leading to mental illness and the protective factors that mitigate them. Materials: Cartolina, pentel pen, masking tape Time: 15 minutes Instruction: Ask the participants to write down events that may cause them distress, such as an upcoming examination, class presentation, bullying, etc. Then ask them to write down how they coped with that stressful situation.
