NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, INDIA 2.41 The disposal of the cases during the year in different ways, by dismissal of the complaint (DIL), by directions to the authorities for taking appropriate action, transferring of the complaint to the State Human Rights Commissions, closure of the case upon consideration of the reports received in pursuance to the Commissions, is indicated in the chart below CASES DISPOSED OF BY NHRC DURING 2018-2019 2.42 At the end of the reporting period, i.e. on 31 March 2019, the total number of cases pending with the Commission was 20,813. These covered 1,188 cases awaiting preliminary consideration and 19,625 cases pending either for want of reports from the authorities concerned or the reports received being pending for consideration by the Commission (Annexure-3). CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS Preventing Custodial Violence 2.43 The NHRC received 1,797 intimations concerning death in judicial custody1, and 136 intimations of death in police custody during the year 2018-19. 2 intimations of death in para-military / defence forces custody was also reported during the review period. It disposed of 1568 cases of custodial death. Out of these 1568 cases,1417 cases relate to death in judicial custody, 151 cases of death in police custody and one case of death in the custody of para-military forces. These figures contain cases of previous years as well.
