2.20 According to the 2000 census (the 2010 official statistics do not have any information on
Orang Asli), there are 132,486 Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia, constituting 0.7% of the
national population. In 2010 the Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA), a department set
up to manage the affairs of Orang Asli,16 estimated the population to be 178,197 people or
36,658 households,17 which is slightly less than 0.5 per cent of the country’s multi-ethnic and
multi-cultural population (Table 3). The demographic profile published in Sistem e-Damak
2010 by the Department of Orang Asli Development as shown in the table below classifies
the Orang Asli for official purposes as Negrito, Senoi and Proto-Malays.
