In April 2024, we conducted a regional online learning program on promoting and protecting the
rights of HRDs. This program equipped 50 participants from 22 NHRIs with practical tools and
guidance to implement the RAP, resulting in increased knowledge and skills for promoting HRD
rights. Following this initiative, three NHRIs received small grants to implement national-level projects,
strengthening their capacity to support HRDs in their countries.
Online Learning Program on Torture Prevention
In collaboration with the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), we updated and re-published our
guide: Preventing Torture: An Operational Guide for NHRIs, with a focus on the gender-related aspects of
torture prevention. This guide was also transformed into a micro-learning course to support NHRIs. From
September to October 2023, participants from 18 NHRIs across the region took part in the course.
Fiji National Workshop on Torture Prevention
Responding to a request from the NHRI of Fiji, we facilitated a two-day national workshop on torture
prevention in November 2023. This workshop enhanced participants’ understanding of international
legal frameworks and equipped them with practical knowledge to function as an oversight mechanism
for torture prevention. The event also provided a platform for stakeholders to collaborate on strategies
to address torture and inhuman treatment within Fiji.
NHRI – National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) Workshop
As part of the NHRI.EU project, funded by the European Union, we held a workshop in June 2024,
bringing together NHRIs designated as NPMs under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention
Against Torture. Five NHRIs attended, along with two additional NHRIs considering the establishment
of NPMs. This workshop led to the creation of a community of practice for NPM practitioners, fostering
ongoing collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

the UNCAT. Since then, SUHAKAM has been
actively engaging with the ACTCAT Coalition
for its strategic planning, incorporating these
inputs into our advocacy activities for 2024.
