Accreditation experiences from the region Thailand In 2020, the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) participated in the pilot phase of our Accreditation Program while holding B-status accreditation and seeking an upgrade to A-status. Following the SCA’s review in December 2020, Thailand’s accreditation was deferred for 18 months—the first time a B-status NHRI received such a deferment, highlighting its progress toward compliance with the Paris Principles. During the deferral period, the NHRCT, with APF guidance, implemented several reforms to address SCA concerns, including advocating for government reforms, enhancing the transparency of the commissioner appointment process, and improving monitoring mechanisms for human rights violations. As a result, the NHRCT was upgraded to A-status in 2022, significantly strengthening its role and enhancing its credibility. The NHRCT’s accreditation journey highlights how targeted support can contribute to meaningful legislative and institutional improvements. Australia In 2022, the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) requested APF support to address challenges in retaining its A-status accreditation. The SCA had deferred the AHRC’s accreditation for 18 months due to concerns over its commissioner appointment process. The newly elected government responded by introducing a bill to amend the AHRC’s mandate and develop new policy guidance for commissioner appointments, showing its commitment to reform. In October 2023, the AHRC’s A-status was retained, marking a major achievement for human rights in Australia. Pakistan In 2022, the newly established National Commission for Human Rights of Pakistan (NCHR) participated in the APF’s annual program and obtained APF support with GANHRI accreditation. The APF guided the NCHR through the process, providing feedback on draft submissions and preparing their leadership for the SCA interview. In 2024, the NCHR achieved A-status—a major milestone for a new NHRI. Through tailored guidance and collaboration, the APF Annual Program on GANHRI Accreditation helps institutions improve accreditation outcomes, align with global standards, and strengthen their role in promoting human rights. This initiative is building a stronger, more cohesive network of NHRIs equipped to uphold human rights across our region.
