4. Awareness of Women’s Rights
SUHAKAM conducted two programmes on women’s rights for officials
in Johor State Education Department and female inmates in Alor Setar
Prison, respectively on 20 November and 9 December. Commissioner
Datuk Lok Yim Pheng led these programmes. The main objectives were
to promote greater awareness of women’s rights as enshrined in the
Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against
Women (CEDAW), as well as to provide a platform for deliberation on
issues pertaining to women’s rights in Malaysia. Among the key issues
and recommendations derived from the sessions were:
