PART 3: RIGHTS AT RISK: KEY CHALLENGES FOR THE TOURISM INDUSTRY IN VIETNAM
The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s Principles
on Forced Labour
Unfortunately, forms of modern slavery – such as forced labour, debt bondage and human
trafficking – are prevalent in the tourism sector. No country is immune from these gross
human rights violations, which affect all regions of the world.44
In 2018, the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (formerly known as the International Tourism
Partnership) launched the Principles on Forced Labour. The aim of the Principles is to
‘prioritise action to address the primary drivers of forced labour within the hotel industry’.45
The three principles are:
•
•
•
Every worker should have freedom of movement
No worker should pay for a job
No worker should be indebted or coerced to work46
The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has also developed free online training to assist hotels
in identifying modern slavery risks.47
