THE RIGHT TO HEALTH IN PRISON: RESULTS OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY AND REPORT Suggestions by Prison Staff (Q: b and c96) 3.85 In addition, 22 per cent (193 staff) suggested prioritizing staff healthcare and providing routine health screening for all staff; 13 per cent (117 staff) suggested providing protective gear such as gloves, masks as well as vaccines to staff, while 3 per cent (24 staff) suggested for better delivery of healthcare services to prisoners for the benefit of all. MEDICAL STAFF Part I: Demographic Information 3.86 A total of 52 medical staff participated in the survey. Undesirably, 4 provided empty questionnaires, leaving a total of 48 medical staff with complete forms. Based on the data, 79 per cent were male, with an average age of 32 (range 23-75 years). 50 per cent (24 staff) worked for a short duration (0-2 years) in prison, while 25 per cent (13 staff) served for more than 10 years. Part II: Quantitative Research and Analysis Health Concerns of Medical Staff (Q: a97) 3.87 Forty-six (46) per cent (22 staff) believed that skin diseases, such as scabies were most prevalent. 31 per cent (15 staff) felt that upper respiratory tract infection was a common disease in prison. 3.88 On whether the health problems reported by prisoners were genuine, 38 per cent (18 staff) felt that they were but 31 per cent (15 staff) thought that the illnesses complained of maybe exaggerated. The remaining 21 per cent (10 staff) were doubtful. Availability of Medical Supplies (Q: c98) 3.89 Ninety (90) per cent (43 staff) complained of shortage in medicines, while 69 per cent (33 staff) complained of out-dated medical facilities and equipment.
