THE RIGHT TO HEALTH IN PRISON: RESULTS OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY AND REPORT Quarantine (Q: m93) 3.80 With regard to new intake processing, 46 per cent (402 staff) were of the view that prisoners must be quarantined for a duration of 2 weeks, 39 per cent (345 staff) stated that 1 week was sufficient while 7 per cent (63 staff) were of the view that prison should consider to quarantine sick prisoners between 3 to 6 months. Surprisingly, 16 per cent (145 staff) felt that prisoners must be quarantined for the entire duration of their sentence. Treatment for Prisoners based on Staff Opinion (Q: n94) 3.81 74 per cent (654 staff) felt that prisoners suffering from infectious diseases must be referred to a medical practitioner; 75 per cent (660 staff) stated that they must be quarantined; 56 per cent (496 staff) stated that all sick prisoners are better off being admitted to the prison clinic or a nearby hospital. Part III: Qualitative Research and Analysis Understanding of the Concept of Right to Health in Prison (Q: a95) 3.82 When asked about their understanding of the right to health in prison, 34 per cent (297 staff) stated that it meant prioritizing staff healthcare, given their risky work environment and high exposure to infectious diseases. 3.83 24 per cent (213 staff) responded that it meant equal access to health services by prisoners and prison staff to ultimately improve the general healthcare delivery in prisons. 3.84 2 per cent (19 staff) thought that right to health in prisons meant free access to healthcare services for prisoners, while 9 per cent (75 staff) responded that they did not understand the concept.
