Chapter 1 - Report of the Education and Public Relations Group (b) Courtesy Calls and Meetings On 21 April, the Commission called on the Minister of Home Affairs, YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The session, which was also attended by YB Senator Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan, discussed several pertinent human rights issues concerning the Commission’s thematic studies on the right to health in prison and deaths in police custody, migrant workers, children in immigration detention centres as well as the amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act 1953. On 28 April, the Commission paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar. Among issues discussed were those pertaining to deaths in police custody, conditions and facilities in police lock-ups, the Commission’s key recommendations on peaceful assemblies, the use of the Prevention of Crime Act as well as PDRM’s official response to the complaints forwarded by the Commission. On 14 October, the Commission met with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department YB Senator Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan to discuss several pertinent matters concerning the establishment of the proposed Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights, proposed amendments to SUHAKAM’s founding Act, the proposal to establish a media council, progress of the NHRAP, UPR recommendations as well as the mandatory death penalty in Malaysia. 7. MEDIA RELATIONS The Commission issued 25 press statements, attended 22 media interviews and responded to 20 media enquiries on various contentious human rights issues. These included the use of the Sedition Act, the Prevention of Crime Act, Malaysia’s second UPR, freedom of association and expression, human trafficking, business and human rights, migrant workers, persons with disabilities (PWD), custodial deaths, Baram Dam, Kinrara Damansara Expressway (KIDEX), the deportation of 155 Uighurs in Malaysia, the Commission’s thematic studies on the right to health in prisons as well as on deaths in police custody, and the NHRAP. The Commission also conducted six press conferences, two of which were in conjunction with the public release of its 2013 Annual Report and the Human Rights Awards Ceremony, and four of which were as a series of briefing sessions on the UPR, held in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Penang, Johor and Sarawak. A media session was also held on 18 November in Kuching, Sarawak to brief the media about the Commission’s work as well as several key human rights issues in Sarawak. As at 31 December, the Commission’s Facebook page had 3,812 fans while its Twitter account had 8,825 followers. 34
