As part of the integrated activities of Human Rights Week, the Commission also worked with
the University of Selangor and Serdang Royals Debate Club to jointly organise a Human Rights
Debate Tournament from 6-9 December, with the aim of promoting greater understanding
among university students via critical discourse on the importance of human rights as well as
current issues revolving around human rights locally and globally.
20 teams from 10 local educational institutions competed in the tournament. The Grand Finals
of the tournament, which was officiated by the Commission’s Chairman, Tan Sri Hasmy Agam,
attracted 100 attendees including representatives from Government agencies, local universities
and the media. The champion was the team from University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) represented
by Rafiq Saladdin and Muqriz Mustaffa Kamal. Rafiq Saladdin also won the Best Speaker Award.
The other finalists were Sarah Choong Ee Mei and Patrick Cheang Zhi Chian from the University
of Malaya (UM), and UiTM’s Terence Aaron and Muayyad Khairulmaini as well as Izzat Arif Abd
Jamil and Syed Afiq Syed Albakri.
