Malala Yousafzai Pakistani activist for female education and Nobel Prize laureate The Commission maintained its regular engagement with various stakeholders including Government agencies, national human rights institutions (NHRIs), non-Governmental organisations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, higher learning institutions, and the media. During the year, the Commission held three major events, namely the public release of the 2013 Annual Report, the fourth Human Rights Awards ceremony, and the celebration of International Human Rights Day. The Commission continued to publicize its opinions on contentious human rights issues by issuing press statements (see Appendix I), conducting press conferences, responding to media queries, and participating in media interviews. 1. PUBLIC RELEASE OF THE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT On 25 April, the Commission held a press conference on the public release of its 2013 Annual Report. Among the key issues raised by the media were those pertaining to the Commission’s National Inquiry Report, complaints received in 2013, deaths in custody, the Commission’s periodic visits to places of detention, as well as the progress of the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights. On 27 November, the Commission also held two dialogue sessions with relevant Government agencies to discuss the Government’s Responses to the issues and recommendations contained in the Commission’s Annual Report. The first session was attended by 35 participants, comprising of representatives from the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU), the Royal Police of Malaysia (PDRM), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Attorney-General’s Chamber, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (MWFCD), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). 27
