v. Statements are being recorded from injured persons. Thirteen persons had suffered injuries and had been admitted to the hospital, and twenty police officers had also reportedly been injured. These reportedly included one SSP, one ASP, a Sub-Inspector (SI), an Inspector (IP), six Sergeants and ten Police Constables. vi. SDIG Rohana stated that investigations were being conducted in a transparent manner and statements of all persons involved would be recorded. Further scientific, technical and circumstantial evidence in respect of the incident would also be collected. He stated that a request from the court was also made to order a Government Analyst to visit the scene and give his opinion in respect of the circumstances of the scene. vii. Responding to questions, he said that the investigating team will pay special attention towards the damage of property and that public property, private property and property belonging to certain institutions had allegedly been damaged during the incident and the total value of damages will be estimated. He also said that one person had been arrested in connection with the incident. He requested the people of the Rambukkana area to act in a peaceful manner.66 2.7 Developments on 21 April 2022 2.7.1 Investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department The IGP had directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct an impartial, comprehensive probe into the death of an individual that occurred after police opened fire at protesters in Rambukkana to disperse them. The directives were given to the DIG in charge of the CID, W. Thilakaratne, as per a statement issued by the Government Information Department. It was further reported that the CID will take over the investigations pursuant to Article 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act. The IGP had also reportedly instructed the CID to submit an interim report within a period of three days.67 2.7.2 Proceedings in the magistrate’s court Media reports outlined the excerpts of the testimonies of witnesses who testified in court.
