Women and girls with disabilities and Māori women and girls are more likely to suffer from domestic violence than other women in New Zealand.12 Poverty and social isolation is also a key driver for violence and abuse.13 16. Between 2009 and 2015:14 ➢ There were 194 family violence deaths15 o 48% of the deceased and 49% of offenders lived in the most deprived neighbourhoods (quintile 5) o 77% of Māori deceased and 68% of Māori offenders lived in areas with the highest levels of deprivation, compared with 29% of non-Māori deceased and 36 % of nonMāori offenders ➢ There were 92 intimate partner violence (IPV) death events o 68% of the deceased were women o Māori were three times more likely to be deceased and offenders in IPV deaths than non- Māori o 44% of the female primary victims resided in the most deprived neighbourhoods o 77% of the Māori female primary victims resided in the most deprived neighbourhoods, compared to 30% of the non-Māori female primary victims ➢ There were 56 child abuse and neglect (CAN) deaths o 80% of deaths involved children aged under 5 years o Māori children aged 0-4 years were four times more likely to be killed by CAN than non-Māori children aged 0-4 years o 49% of all children killed by CAN resided in the most socioeconomically deprived neighbourhoods 12 Carolyn Frohmader and Therese Sands, “Fact Sheet: Violence Against People with Disabilities in Institutions and Residential Settings, November 2014. 13 Pestkaa, K., & Wendta, S.
