people representing governmental and non-governmental institutions and
agencies, as well as representatives of various media, were trained to
embrace the concepts and provisions of the Convention. For the first time in
Jordan, the NCHR involved trainers with different disabilities and translated
the training materials into Braille method, in addition to bringing sign
language interpreters in all the workshops that have been implemented.
In this connection, the following observations were recorded:
1. Awareness-raising programs prompt dealing positively with persons
with disabilities under the title of "integration". Then, these programs
address the importance of participation of persons with disabilities in
all walks of life, through the exercise of fundamental rights and
freedoms that came in the international conventions, most notably the
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
2. The media is considered the authentic and leading interface in the
process of adopting national attitudes and issues. It had active
participation in the specialized training programs, which helped to
make a quantum leap in dealing with disability issues.
3. Persons with disabilities suffer from society's perception towards
them, as they are normally dealt with in an inferior way or with pity
and sorrow. Families of some persons with disabilities explained this
problem, noting that disability does not represent a defect that detracts
from the standing of the family in society. The most important areas
where such violation occurs are the governorates of Irbid and Ajloun,
where increasing complaint about the lack of awareness appears.
