Chapter ChapterTwo Two Human Rights Situation in Bangladesh in 2014 The year 2014 in terms of human rights situation in Bangladesh could be regarded as a milestone in many ways. In this year, Bangladesh won membership of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for 2015-2017. In addition, the Government of Bangladesh had taken steps to submit some of its outstanding reports to the human rights treaty bodies. While the country was free from any large scale natural or man made disaster, there prevailed relative social stability and security as there was no major incidences of political violence from February onward till the end of the year. In 2014, the Government enacted a number of important legislations, for example: (a) the Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust Act, 2014 (b) the National Broadcasting Rules, 2014 (c) the Semi-formal Education Act, 2014, d) the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Act, 2014, e) the D.N.A. Foreign Delegation at JAMAKON Act, 2014 etc. In addition, the Government adopted the Broadcasting Policy, 2014 in order to facilitate development of the broadcasting media. The Government is currently taking measures to draft a Broadcasting Act under the purview of the policy in consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including media personnel and experts. 6
