As many as 13 million deaths could be prevented every year by
making our environments healthier. Women and children make
up a disproportionate number of those at risk and the lives of
four million children under five years could be saved by
addressing environmental risks.
In the least developed countries, one third of deaths and
disease are a direct result of modifiable environmental factors,
that is, environmental factors that are realistically amenable to
change using available technologies, policies and preventative
and public health measures”.
