we are able to render visible their stories and their voices. We are able to reiterate the urgent call for detention facilities to ensure that both women’s practical and strategic needs are addressed; we are able to reiterate the call to mainstream the Mandela and Bangkok Rules in detention facilities’ policies and programs; and in general, the call to uphold the human rights of women deprived of liberty. Every day in detention, and while awaiting trial, women deprived of liberty face myriad challenges. Many of them face intersectional discrimination – as women, as women deprived of liberty, as solo parents, as mothers having to leave children behind, as persons of diverse SOGIESC, as women with disability. As Gender Ombud, we are grateful for the opportunity to amplify their stories, to render visible their lived experiences, and to collectively call for the respect and fulfillment of their rights, even during detention.
